The Raiders had a bit of an overhaul last season and thus have a lot of new and young players fighting for a roster spot. It means the coaches still don't have a firm idea of what this team will look like come the season and there is fierce competition across the board. It also means being versatile can up a player's chances of making the team.
“The guys that like aren't an established guy -- which is probably 90% of the team -- in order for them to make the roster it’s special teams and playing multiple positions," said Kubiak. "Receivers that can play all three, fullbacks that can play tight end and vice versa, DBs that can play corner, nickel and safety, so that's how you make the roster in the NFL.”
There are some 31 rookies and first-year players on this roster right now. That's more than a third of the offseason roster. Most of whom (21) weren't drafted.
A cursory look at the roster puts the number at around 13 established veteran starters, which means about 85% of the roster not an established veteran starter on this team. So, Kubiak's figure is fairly accurate.
This team is in full rebuild mode. It will look wildly different than last season, few roster spots are secured at this point, and a large portion of those spots will go to those players who can show the most value through versatility and special teams.
