Is it me, or does it seem like every time the Washington Commanders are on the clock, the NFL draft coverage goes to a commercial break? Anyway, when the NFL Network returned from a commercial break, Washington's pick was in, and Commanders' brass were celebrating in the war room with plenty of hugs and handshakes.
During this time, something stood out to me. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. came to offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, and you could see Whitt congratulate the OC. The cameras then turned back to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who revealed Washington's pick at No. 29 overall: Oregon offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr.
The pick was widely praised. The Commanders chose to protect franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels. Kingsbury was clearly excited, and Washington's X account shared a video where general manager Adam Peters showed a handwritten note that Kingsbury gave him before the pick.
Whitt lost this battle. Fortunately, several good players remain on the board for Washington heading into Day 2. Whether it's a cornerback or an edge rusher, the Commanders should have options to give Whitt's unit more help.

Kliff left a note on AP's desk this week...
