Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties will each be represented this week as the NCHSAA high school basketball playoffs wind to the regional final stage.
Two of them have advanced as double-digit seeds; the Kings Mountain boys ranked 12th in the NCHSAA 6A West bracket, with 23-seed North Lincoln pushing through to the 5A girls final.
STILL DANCING: Hunter Huss basketball surges past Hickory, into NCHSAA 5A West final. Here's how
RUN-AND-GUN: Here's how North Lincoln girls basketball plans to take next step in state playoffs
Kings Mountain pulled off one of the state tournament’s biggest upsets — regardless of classification — by knocking off 6A West top seed and reigning NCHSAA champion Ben L. Smith, 69-68. Caleb Nixon’s free throw in the waning seconds propelled the Mountaineers into a 6A West final matchup against No. 2 Charlotte Catholic.
In the midst of its deepest playoff run in decades, Kings Mountain is seeking its first trip to a state final since 1990, when it finished as NCHSAA 3A state runner-up.
Despite forfeiting 17 of its games this season due to an ineligible player, North Lincoln’s girls squad is back in a regional final for the second straight year. Each of the Knights’ four postseason wins, including victories over Big South 5A/6A champion Hunter Huss, as well as South Piedmont 4A/5A co-champions West Rowan and Northwest Cabarrus.
North Lincoln vies for its first trip to an NCHSAA state basketball final when it takes on 5-seed Forest Hills, which upset top-ranked Oak Grove in the regional semifinal round.
Huss is also back in the regional final round after falling short a season ago to eventual 3A state champion Ben L. Smith. The top seed in the 5A bracket, Huss used a third-quarter surge to push past fourth-ranked Hickory, 76-71.
Riding a 14-game win streak, the Huskies will take on No. 2 Jay M. Robinson seeking a berth to their first NCHSAA state final since 2011.
Huss and Kings Mountain’s boys squads, as well as North Lincoln’s girls team are among 32 teams which will head to Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory for this week’s NCHSAA regional final round. Here’s a look at the schedule for this week’s western regional matchups.
