With 27 days remaining until the Elizabethton Cyclones season opener against Science Hill and 42 days until the Iowa State Cyclones open their season against SEMO, the 19th commit of Iowa State’s 2027 class William Bowers joined us for an interview.

JL: First and foremost, what brought you to Iowa State for a visit and then a commit?

WB: Coach Grande came out to Elizabethton to watch me practice, which gave us a great opportunity to connect and start building a relationship. That connection is exactly what led to my visit to Iowa State. Coach Grande was always honest with me, easy to talk to, and made me feel wanted at Iowa State.

When I came to Ames for my unofficial and then my Official Visit, I met Coach Pavlick and Coach Studdard and really liked both of them. The facilities and stadium were incredible, then I met Coach Rogers, he was intense and definitely someone I could see being my Coach! I knew I was at home and committed on the visit.

JL: What is your preliminary takeaway on Ames and the coaching staff?

WB: Ames reminds me of my hometown, just no mountains. I felt at home the first time I was there. I loved the town and the people. I love the way Iowa State is everywhere in Ames, it was easy to see how much everyone loves the University. The coaching staff was enthusiastic and they know how to develop specialists, and when I met Coach Rogers, I knew he was going to win a lot of football games and I want to be a part of that.

JL: What is the perception / brand of Iowa State from your perspective on the eastern side of Tennessee?

WB: The Iowa State brand is a power 4 brand, gritty and tough with an intense fan base. Anytime I have watched Iowa State, the games were exciting and fans were always really into the game. It seems there is a real loyalty between the team and the fans!

JL: When it comes to your senior year for the Elizabethton Cyclones, what are your goals?

WB: My coach and the administration of my school were able to make it work that I can graduate early to be an early enrollee at Iowa State in January. On the football field, my goals are to help my team win games any way I can, be accurate on my field goals and extra points, and crush touchbacks all season. I want to set an example for the younger players about hard work and taking care of business on and off the field.

JL: On a similar note, what are your goals when it comes to your time in Ames and what can Cyclone fans expect from you?

WB: My goals in Ames are to be known as a great teammate and a guy who helps my team win games anyway that I can. I want to help Iowa State win the Big 12 championship and on a personal note, I want to win the Lou Groza award. Cyclone fans can expect me to be one of the hardest working players in the weight room and on the field. I am 100% football and I bring enthusiasm to game days and love my team.

JL: What, if anything, do you have to share opinion wise regarding the special teams room at Iowa State as it stands for the 2026 season?

WB: The special teams room will be great in 2026. Kyle is one of the best kickers in college football and Jonah and Ethan are great punters. I have watched the long snappers up close and they are the best, we will have a great unit all season.

JL: If you’d like to give a shoutout to anyone who’s been on this journey with you, I’d be sure to include them in the story.

WB: My football coach, Coach Witten, has pushed me hard in the weight room and on the field to be physically and mentally prepared. My kicking coach, Coach Wilhoit, pushes me to perfect my technique and to stay focused through preparation and training. My biggest supporter in this journey has been my Dad. He has driven me to Nashville for my training more times than I can count. He has been my biggest supporter since I began kicking in the 1st grade.

JL: If you’ve got anything else you’d like to share I’m digital ears, otherwise, thank you for your time.

WB: I have been on a Cyclone football team every fall since I was 5 years old. At Elizabethton, we always say “Cyclone for Life.”
