The Washington Wizards still have room to finalize the 2026-27 roster ahead of the start of preseason, but the latest roster move answered one longtime lingering question while also reuniting with a veteran for another stint in Washington.
Khris Middleton was part of what ended up becoming a six-team trade that sent the shooting guard from the Dallas Mavericks to the Washington Wizards, while also sending D'Angelo Russell to the Memphis Grizzlies despite the point guard opting into his player option the month prior. While Russell was not expected to join the Wizards after general manager Will Dawkins told reporters following the midseason trade that Russell was not reporting to the team, the reunion of Middleton in DC materialized just months after he was shipped out of the organization.
Middleton was part of the seven-player trade that sent him to Dallas in exchange for veteran Anthony Davis ahead of the deadline in 2025-26, a second trades that sent shockwaves around the league about the Wizards' efforts to return to competitive basketball. Fast forward five months later, Middleton will share the same floor as Davis makes his debut with the team in the fall. Yet Davis is only part of the new foundation with top overall pick AJ Dybantsa and Felix Okpara set to join a young core including Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Will Riley and Tre Johnson among several others.
"Definitely a talented group," he told his hometown station. "Their young guys have made a huge jump development-wise since they've been drafted. Year three for a lot of them, with some help, adding Anthony Davis and Trae Young, this team has a lot of upside. Throw in the No. 1 pick, AJ [Dybantsa] also, I'm excited about what this team can do."
Of course, Middleton first arrived in Washington as part of the trade that sent Kyle Kuzma to the Milwaukee Bucks ahead of the 2025 trade deadline where the veteran started in all 14 games he was available, averaging 10.7 points on 41.3% shooting and 27.7% from three. That role remained the same after also starting in all 34 games he was available this past season after averaging a nearly similar stat line -- 10.3 points on 43.3% shooting and 33.3% from three -- yet whether he steps back into that role in his second stint inside Capital One Arena may be the question.
With a chance for him to now step into a veteran role in his 15th NBA season, Middleton will look to add to that presence in the backcourt alongside Trae Young in hopes of serving as another spark en route to a hopeful postseason run. Yet with reported mutual interest ahead of the second stint materializing, Middleton will do so back in familiar territory in Washington.
