Khadija Shaw has committed her future to Manchester City by signing a new four-year contract with the Women’s Super League champions.

The WSL Golden Boot winner’s contract was due to expire this summer and it was expected she could leave the club with Chelsea making a contract offer worth at least £1million per year for the 29-year-old.

But during the club’s joint parade with the men’s team on Monday in Manchester, it was confirmed the Jamaica forward, who scored 21 WSL goals this season, would be staying.

It all seemed to happen in slow motion during the celebrations. Shaw’s future was mentioned, there was some confusion, an awkward glance or two and then the confirmation from Shaw herself.

“I’m still here, I’m still hungry and there’s no place I’d rather be,” she told the crowd

There were huge cheers in the arena, which was packed and full of emotion and energy.

Of the new deal, Shaw said: “I’m so happy to be at this incredible Club for another four years. I’ve always said that Manchester City feels like home – I’ve developed so much as a player and grown so much as a person during my first five years here.

“Helping the girls win the WSL title is one of the proudest moments of my career, and I’m so excited to see what we can do next season and beyond – although there’s one more huge game to come against Brighton!

Director of football Therese Sjogran said: “It’s a huge statement from City that we’ve secured the services of one of the best centre-forwards in the world, but also from Bunny that she believes we’re the best place for her to succeed. I’d like to thank her for that continued faith in what we’re hoping to achieve.”

Fair plays are in order for Therese Sjogran and managing director Charlotte O’Neill. For months having to bat back accusations from all side of incompetence to pull off a signing that is no doubt one of the most pivotal in the upcoming transfer window.

Where to begin? City want to be a dynasty. They said as much. Best way to do that? Retain the world’s best striker, the one who is now a three-time Golden Boot winner and your go-to record breaker. Don’t let her go to the very club you’ve just dethroned.

But City have arguably done this with the most grace and finesse possible in a game of agent leaks and media speculation that increasingly lacks those values. O’Neill and Sjogran kept to themselves, unencumbered by the heat and noise. And they’ve got their striker to stay. For City on the pitch, keeping Bunny is integral to success. She has become the total striker she has always promised to become. But arguably off the pitch this is even bigger: City are the club to be at. The best striker in the world just said as much.
