CHICAGO – There are a lot of cool traditions in baseball.

But this one is up there.

A group of young Detroit Tigers – in complete uniform – had to leave the Tigers clubhouse, exit Wrigley Field and go on a coffee run before playing the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, July 21.

It turned into a massive order – 34 different cups of coffee.

So, did manager A.J. Hinch make an order?

“Oh yeah, I tried to order the most complicated one that I could,” Hinch said, smiling. “I thought up everything that you could split and tried to order it to make it difficult.”

Alas, the boys didn’t mess up his order.

“They delivered it as ordered,” Hinch said. “One of the better traditions in baseball is that walk across the street to Starbucks in Chicago at Wrigley. Young guys in full uniform. I hope that never goes away.”

JEFF SEIDEL: Detroit Tigers' ugly loss to Cubs comes with weird silver lining

Some of the Tigers included rookie sensation Kevin McGonigle, right-hander Ty Madden (who had just arrived from Triple-A Toledo), infielder Hao-Yu Lee and outfielder Ben Malgeri.

“We only get to do it every other year, so we make a point of it,” Hinch said.

When Hinch was informed it turned into an impromptu McGonigle autograph signing, he broke into a smile.

“He should have treated the whole coffee shop,” Hinch said.

The traditional coffee run is a little bit different than what rookies had to do back in the day.

“We had to dress up,” veteran right-hander Justin Verlander said, cracking a smile. The 43-year-old made his MLB debut in 2005 – not even a year after McGonigle was born – and went through rookie hazing in 2006.

He left it at that.

Different times.
