Kevin Durant has thoughts on LeBron James joining 76ers in free agency

LeBron James joining the Philadelphia 76ers sent a shockwave throughout the NBA world. Many believed the future Hall of Famer was going to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Miami Heat where he has plenty of history with. even the Golden State Warriors made a ton of sense rather than him heading to Philadelphia.

James heading to the Sixers forms the latest "superteam" as he joins Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe. Maxey averaged 28.3 points, Brown averaged 28.7, Embiid averaged 26.9, and James 20.9 in the 2025-26 season. Those four will be in the starting lineup next to Edgecombe who averaged 16.0 points per game. Philadelphia's starting lineup is hands down the best in the league.

The move does bring criticism from some as James joining the Sixers seems "unfair" to many. Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant has dealt with that throughout his career, particularly in his move to join the Warriors in 2016, and he gave his thoughts on James joining the Sixers per ESPN:

"The last time they put three 20-point scorers on a team, they said it was unfair, which was the [Warriors] team I was on," Durant said at a USA Basketball event Saturday. "[The 76ers] have got four 25-point scorers on this team. So, hell yeah, I think they're going to be a contender. They're going to be a fun team to watch. It's going to be League Pass-worthy."

"I didn't know at all," Durant said. "LeBron is stealth like that. I know there's a lot of noise around him, but you never know what's on his mind. I'm happy for him. It's a great decision for him to go to a team that has a good chance to win. Philly is a great fanbase, a great market, and it's great for the league. There were so many eyes that were tuned in to his decision."

James, a winner of four championships with three different franchises, will look to win his fifth with a fourth different one during his time in Philadelphia. He is with the Sixers on a 2-year deal, the second year is a player option, and he will look to help the franchise get to the mountaintop in the very near future.
