Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph appears confident he will begin training camp on the active roster.
Joseph offered the encouraging response after Jimmy Liao MD raised a question about the Pro Bowl safety’s status in a post on X.
“Detroit Lions PUP list will be announced soon. Will Kerby Joseph be on it?
Either way, he’ll be significantly load-managed throughout camp to preserve his knee….”
Joseph responded directly to Liao’s post.
“How much yall wanna bet im not on there ”
It was a brief answer, but Lions fans did not need much help interpreting it.
Joseph’s response does not serve as an official medical update from the Lions. Detroit’s training staff and coaching staff will make the final decision on whether he begins camp on the physically unable to perform list.
Still, Joseph clearly does not expect his name to be included.
That would be welcome news for a Detroit defense that needs its playmaking safety available after his knee issues created uncertainty throughout the offseason.
Avoiding the PUP list would also give Joseph more flexibility during camp. The Lions could still limit his practice workload, hold him out of certain drills or build in recovery days without formally placing him on the list.
Liao’s point about load management may still prove accurate even if Joseph begins camp on the active roster.
Detroit has little reason to push Joseph through a full training camp workload.
The goal is not to have him peak during July practices in Allen Park. The Lions need him healthy when the regular season begins and available for the long grind that follows.
Joseph has developed into one of the NFL’s most dangerous defensive backs when the football is in the air. His instincts, range and ability to create turnovers give Detroit something that cannot easily be replaced.
A carefully managed camp would make sense.
Being active from the beginning would still represent an encouraging step.
