Allen Park — When it comes to the future status of All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell said Thursday that he genuinely doesn't know what to expect regarding the knee injury that sidelined Joseph for 11 games last season.
Campbell was asked about the confidence level that they were going to get Joseph, who last played in a Week 6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, back in time for the 2026.
Campbell believes that a real update won't come until training camp, at the earliest.
"Really, I don't know. I honestly do not know," Campbell said. "I know this: We've done everything we can, and he's done everything he can do to this point. And we are trying to be as smart as we can and not push this until we absolutely have to. Because once we've done that, then we'll know one way or another. It's not worth it right now."
Campbell said Joseph is "slowly building" and "continuing to strengthen" the knee. Joseph was dejected when asked about the knee injury last season, saying, "You don't fix it. Just keep the faith," seemingly implying that surgery wouldn't help the issue.
Added Campbell on Thursday: "He's getting treatment, he's done some of these different things in different places to try to help. I feel good about that. I feel good about everything we've done, and so has he. We won't know. I mean, honestly, we probably won't know until we get into the thick of training camp."
The Lions are expected to be without safety Brian Branch for some portion of training camp and/or the regular season. Branch tore his Achilles tendon in a Week 14 win over the Dallas Cowboys last season.
The team has preemptively reinforced the safety position this offseason, re-signing Thomas Harper and Avonte Maddox while adding Christian Izien and Chuck Clark in free agency.
