If you’ve been online over the last couple days, you’ve likely seen an ongoing discussion about Kentucky Basketball fan behavior and its role when it comes to recruiting.

There’s long been a discussion about the behavior of Kentucky fans, but that has ramped up again recently with the announcement that Jasper Johnson and Brandon Garrison are entering the transfer portal. Johnson and Garrison probably drew more criticism than any players on the team this past season.

But how much of a factor is fan behavior when it comes to recruiting especially?

Well, Dick Gabriel weighed in with some information he has been told.

This isn’t really surprising. Coaches on the recruiting trail will pull out all the stops to try to land their prospects.

But we also should remember that there are people in pretty much every fanbase who post social media rants. Cayden Boozer received many nasty messages after Duke’s Elite 8 loss. Hunter Dickinson has talked openly about poor fan behavior during his time at Kansas. Put simply, this is far from just a Kentucky problem.

Is there more of it at Kentucky? Yeah, probably. Kentucky has one of the largest fan bases and is one of the most passionate fan bases. You could reasonably expect that. But put simply, this is far from just a Kentucky problem.

Fans should exercise a lot more caution when posting online. Generally, I think fans should avoid tagging players or players’ families when they post something negative. That would be a good starting point.
