With a desperate charge down the front straight, Golden Tempo’s win at the 152nd Kentucky Derby makes Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer to win the biggest event in American horse racing. With Jose Ortiz aboard, the 23-1 shot was finding love at the window throughout the day. The morning line was set at 30-1 for the son of Curlin and Carrumba.
The favorite Renegade finished second, as his terrible rail position saw him boxed in from the gate, and it took a tremendous trip just to fall short by a beck. Ocelli was a late add to the field as an alternate, but it was a terrific payout for the 70-1 shot from Florida to show.

Kentucky Derby purse 2026 with prize money
The purse for the 2026 Kentucky Derby is the same as 2024. The top-five horses will finish in the money. Here’s the payout breakdown:
- First: $3.1 million
- Second: $1 million
- Third: $500,000
- Fourth: $250,000
- Fifth: $150,000
The winner jockey usually takes home 10 percent of the prize, while the jockeys who come in No. 2 and No. 3 usually take home five percent.
