Fans of the Kentucky Wildcats are unhappy with how the offseason has played out so far. Coach Mark Pope failed to land any of the top recruits or transfer portal targets, and the roster still has a few big needs. Those needs will get even bigger if center Malachi Moreno elects to stay in the NBA draft.
Moreno will return to Lexington if he pulls out of the draft, and that was thought to be the most likely outcome for a while. However, a recent mock draft has Moreno entering first round territory, and that could change things.
The NBA draft combine begins on May 10, and lasts for a week, giving aspiring players a chance to show what they can do, and potentially raise their draft stock. Players can also be worked out privately by NBA teams wanting a closer look, and that happened to Tuesday for Moreno. Per Adam Zagoria, Moreno worked out for the New York Knicks on Tuesday night.
Obviously, these workouts are common, so it doesn't mean a lot as far as Moreno's stock in concerned. However, the Knicks do have three picks overall, two of which are in the late 1st - early 2nd range. The combine workouts will be much more important, though.
If Moreno does stay in the draft, Kentucky will be in desperation mode at center. Currently, Moreno and Reece Potter are the only two centers on the team, and Potter isn't considered a starting-quality player yet. Big Blue Nation is certainly rooting for Moreno, but really need to him back next year.
