Kentucky men's basketball self-reported a minor NCAA rules violation in May involving high school recruiting, according to a report first obtained by the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The violation occurred in April between Kentucky assistant coach Mo Williams and Tyran Stokes, the No. 1 player in the country and a Louisville native. NCAA rules prevent coaches from interacting with players on social media until the player has officially signed financial aid paperwork.

Stokes tweeted on April 28 that, later in the evening, he would be announcing his commitment on ESPN's "Inside the NBA" show.

Williams replied 14 minutes after Stokes' initial post saying, "Let’s gooooooooooooo."

The assistant coach deleted the reply not long after he posted it when he was alerted by other members of the staff, but it had already been seen by thousands on social media. Stokes later announced his commitment to Kansas that evening and signed with the Jayhawks the next day.

Because Stokes signed with Kansas, Kentucky staff could no longer have contact with him. If he were to be released from his National Letter of Intent, Kentucky self-imposed a 45-day ban in-person and a 14-day ban on electronic contact with Stokes. Coaches also would have been prohibited from off-campus contact with him during the 2025-26 academic year.

The school addressed the violation during its monthly meeting with coaches across all sports. The Southeastern Conference accepted Kentucky's self-imposed penalties, while the NCAA added a one-week ban on written and electronic recruiting correspondence with any recruits.

The incident was classified as a Level III infraction, the least serious category of NCAA rules violations.
