The Wildcats have faced another setback in their recruitment efforts, as elite forward Christian Collins has decided to take his talents elsewhere. Initially scheduled to announce his commitment on Tuesday, he opted for a delay until Wednesday, leaving fans wondering if the Kentucky Wildcats could stage a last-minute coup. Hopes were briefly lifted, but ultimately, the highly sought-after No. 9 prospect in the nation chose to head west to the USC Trojans, as expected. His final three options included Kentucky and Louisville, but the Trojans emerged victorious.
Collins, a standout from St. John Bosco High School in California, had an impressive junior season that earned him five-star status and placed him among the top three recruits nationally at one point. During his grassroots campaign with Team WhyNot in the EYBL, he averaged nearly 13 points and 8 rebounds per game.
With this commitment, Collins becomes the third player—and third McDonald's All-American—under Eric Musselman for the class of 2026. He joins fellow McDonald’s honorees Adonis Ratliff and Darius Ratliff, mirroring Musselman’s success at Arkansas with Nick Smith, Jordan Walsh, and Anthony Black.
As Mark Pope gears up for April's portal and signing day, losing another key target adds to Kentucky's recruiting challenges this cycle. The Wildcats’ class of 2026 has struggled to gain momentum so far; however, there remains hope with some significant targets still available.
One of those is Tyran Stokes—the top overall recruit for 2026—who plans to return for an unofficial visit to the Bluegrass after his season concludes. While Kentucky initially held an advantage in this race, keep an eye on Kansas as a strong contender.
Additional names on Kentucky’s radar include St. John Bosco guard Brandon McCoy and Compass Prep forward Miikka Murrinen. Meanwhile, the Wildcats are preparing to face Santa Clara as they kick off tournament action this Friday at the St. Louis Regional.
Stay tuned as Mark Pope continues to navigate these recruiting waters and the March Madness run.
