News broke earlier this week that the Seattle Seahawks aren't planning to franchise tag pending free agent running back Kenneth Walker III. The window to franchise tag players opened on Tuesday. Seahawks general manager John Schneider has only applied the tag twice in 16 years, and Walker isn't about to impact his preferred approach.

Applying the franchise tag to Walker would cost the Seahawks $14.1 million, according to Spotrac. That would make Walker the fourth-highest paid running back in 2026. Even the transition tag, an alternative option, carries a value of roughly $11.7 million, the seventh-highest salary at RB.

Indications are the Seahawks could re-sign Walker for a lesser per-year average than the franchise tag or transition tag.

Spotrac lists Walker's market value at $9 million per season. They are projecting the former Michigan State standout to sign a four-year, $36 million contract. That sounds reasonable for a Seahawks team with roughly $61.8 million in cap space.

Even if Walker's price went up following his MVP performance in Super Bowl LX, it's impossible to imagine him matching the $14.1 million value of the franchise tag. Even the transition tag value ($11.7) feels a little unrealistic. The Seahawks should manage to re-sign Walker to a multi-year extension that costs between $9 and $10.5 million per campaign.
