Kelsey Plum made a rousing return from a one-month absence with a strong performance in her debut for the Phoenix Mercury on Monday. They beat the Chicago Sky, 106-101, at Wintrust Arena.
Plum was sidelined for an extended period due to a leg injury, which also prevented her from playing in the All-Star Game in Chicago. But against the Sky, she showed that she did not skip a beat, which is a good omen for the Mercury.
The high-scoring guard came off the bench and tallied 20 points and four rebounds in 21 minutes. She shot 6-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Plum nailed a crucial three-pointer with 53.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give the Mercury the lead, 103-101. It proved to be the momentum-swinger, as Phoenix went on to complete the victory and improve to 12-19. Chicago, meanwhile, fell to 11-19.
That was exactly the top-tier talent that the Mercury expected when they traded for Plum, sending Monique Akoa Makani, a first-round pick, and a second-round pick to the Los Angeles Sparks.
Plum did not waste any time getting her first bucket with the Mercury, scoring on a three-pointer just two minutes into her entry.
Phoenix coach Nate Tibbetts will likely incorporate the two-time champion and five-time All-Star slowly to avoid reaggravating her leg injury. But as soon as she feels totally comfortable, she should be inserted as a starter.
The Mercury are trying to make a late push to qualify for the playoffs. They will return to action on Wednesday against the Atlanta Dream.
