Shedeur Sanders' eventual landing spot was set to be a big story before the NFL Draft got underway. However, the story now a week removed from the event escalated far beyond anyone's measure.

Sanders plummeted down the draft board, falling to the fifth round where the Cleveland Browns eventually selected him. That slide and a prank call to Sanders earlier in the process added drama to an otherwise unfortunate situation.

Regardless of any flaws Sanders has on the tape or off the field, his experience of getting that coveted phone call has been completely tarnished by people who have no association with him.

The draft now over, multiple sources are pouring in their theories and reasons for Sanders' slide. However, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has taken issue with this reaction, lashing out against Sanders' critics on the latest episode of his "New Heights" podcast.

"I think whoever's a (expletive) anonymous that's saying this should come out and say who they were," Kelce urged. "I feel like there's no validity to it. I'm not sure why he dropped. I'm not sure whether it was the interviews or whether it was stuff they saw on film."

Kelce's expletive-charged rant did contain an endorsement for his prospects as a future quarterback of the Browns.

"I could see him being the starting quarterback in Cleveland," Kelce said.

Sanders' slide has brought about controversy not only among fans and media, but among the players within the NFL brotherhood. Both the old and new guard are taking sides to blame the quarterback or shame the league.

In reality, there are probably truths to be found on both sides. Sanders frankly has no one to blame but himself if the wrong impression was left on team leadership. His lack of participation in several pre-draft evaluations also hurt his prospects.

At the same time, Sanders' legitimacy as a prospect originally was not simply because of his father, Deion Sanders. He helped spirit a turnaround at Colorado while the program upgraded to a higher level FBS conference.

There are attributes that could translate to the professional level and make him a real asset for the Browns or another franchise.

But he will have to work to make that opportunity happen and it starts in a loaded quarterback room in Cleveland. All the distractions of those who revel in his failure and those who support him, like Kelce, must be put aside.
