Keaton Wagler's Summer League debut for Clippers raises immediate concern originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Keaton Wagler struggled mightily in his NBA Summer League debut with the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday in Las Vegas.

And no, it's not time to write the high-ranking point guard prospect off already. But yes, there is one reason for concern with him that doesn't exist with the other floor generals who went in the top-10 of the 2026 NBA Draft.

First, the stats themselves: Wagler scored 7 points on 1-for-7 from the field, including 1-for-5 from 3-point range. He was a minus-23 while on the floor.

He also had just one assist in 27 minutes, to go with one turnover.

His lack of impact was pretty shocking, especially with Darius Acuff Jr. on the other side for the Sacramento Kings getting up 20 shots (although only making 6).

But this is the thing with Wagler: Until his freshman season at Illinois, he wasn't viewed near the same level of the other point guards in his class.

No one would've thought he would've been one-and-done with the Fighting Illini. Obviously, you've got to be a solid recruit to end up at Illinois. Wagler was looking at a solid college career ahead of him.

He then took the country by storm to turn himself into a top-10 pick.

But he's not a supreme athlete. His game is based on being the smartest, most-skilled player on the floor.

If NBA athletes can swallow him up, Wagler's upside could be capped.

Of course, this is just one game. Wagler has lots of chances to prove he belongs and to show how good he can be.

But the Clippers' fanbase can't love this start. It raises the questions that exist with Wagler. It's up to him to start answering them positively rather than negatively.
