Across the NBA, there are a few players who can be called the face of the league. For the past decade or so, LeBron James and Stephen Curry have lived up to their billing. Now that they are in the twilight of their careers, Victor Wembanyama looks to be the best candidate to be the face of the league.

In just his third season, he led the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Finals. Unfortunately for him, Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks were in his way, as they ended a 53-year wait to win the NBA championship.

As the biggest rising star in the league, literally and figuratively, a lot of people have already crowned Wembanyama as a surefire champion. Some even thought that would happen as soon as the 2026 NBA Finals.

That did not happen, of course. The Knicks were the better team, as they kept clawing back from big deficits. This includes the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history as they came back from a 29-point deficit to win Game 4.

Unfortunately for Wembanyama, his reputation took a bit of a hit in the 2026 Playoffs. The physicality did get to him at times, so he fought back against it by making some wild elbow swings and shoves.

That has not endeared him to fans around the league, which has led to the Knicks themselves getting asked about it. As always, Towns had an awesome answer, as he only focused on the positive impact that Wemby makes on basketball.

"I mean, he's taller. He's a great player, a once-in-a-generation player. Someone that the league is honored to have. To be able to see that size and skill is something we haven't been able to see in the game of basketball before," Towns said on TODAY alongside his teammates.

"On the court, my job was simple: just make it as difficult as possible for a great player to score, but also impact both sides of the basketball."

Wembanyama will have his success in the future, but it was not this season. This was his first-ever postseason run, so if he is this good this early, the league is in trouble. However, the Knicks are not part of that just yet.
