MANHATTAN — Kansas State officially announced that it has fired Jerome Tang as men's basketball coach.
“This was a decision that was made in the best interest of our university and men’s basketball program," K-State athletic director Gene Taylor said. “Recent public comments and conduct, in addition to the program’s overall direction, have not aligned with K-State’s standards for supporting student-athletes and representing the university. We wish Coach Tang and his family all the best moving forward.”
A national search for K-State's next coach will begin immediately. Taylor will meet with the media at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15. An interim coach will be announced in the near future.
National reports are suggesting that Kansas State is attempting to fire Tang "for cause," hoping to avoid an $18.675 million buyout. The Wildcats are 10-15 overall with a 1-11 record in Big 12 play. They have six games remaining before the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City.
Tang finished his K-State career with a 71-57 overall record. He made $3.6 million as Kansas State's coach in 2025-26. He was the 29th-highest paid coach in the country a season ago.
Taylor's statement, referring to "recent public comments and conduct," is a reference to Tang's viral comments after the Wildcats' 91-62 loss to Cincinnati on Feb. 11.
"This was embarrassing," Tang said on Wednesday. "These dudes do not deserve to wear this uniform, and there will be very few of them in it next year. I'm embarrassed for the university, I'm embarrassed for our fans, and our student section. It's just ridiculous."
