The Kansas City Royals are likely going to sell ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline. They will not enter a complete rebuild, though. Kansas City still features a talented core of players with Bobby Witt Jr. leading the way. Veterans could be available, though. Starting pitcher Seth Lugo may be a trade candidate.
Lugo got the start on Friday night for Kansas City. The veteran right-handed hurler allowed only two runs (one earned) across six innings of work on the mound. He only struck out three hitters and he did walk two batters, but Lugo was able to limit the damage.
It was a big start for a pitcher who has endured a consistent overall campaign. Lugo has now turned in a 4.39 ERA across 20 outings this season. He has 89 strikeouts in 110.2 innings of work.
Lugo will not be the best pitching trade candidate before the deadline. With that being said, many contenders around the MLB world would be open to acquiring a veteran starter with a proven track record. No, he is not Tarik Skubal or Joe Ryan, but Lugo would come at a much cheaper price and he is capable of helping teams win games.
The Royals are not guaranteed to trade Lugo, but moving on from him makes the most sense. Kansas City is in last place in the American League Central standings. They are not a contender this year. Getting prospects back for Lugo would be a reasonable decision to say the least.
There are not expected to be many true sellers in MLB this year. With the addition of the third Wild Card a few years ago, many teams that have played mediocre baseball are still in contention. That leaves only the teams that have endured unquestionably lackluster seasons as true sellers.
The Royals are among those teams. They should look to take advantage of the market, as contenders may need to over-pay for players this year. Winning is always the goal, but it is not a bad year to be a seller.
For example, the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins have underperformed but they are technically still in contention. There is a chance that both Skubal and Ryan won't be moved before the trade deadline. There are many similar situations around the league.
That means a pitcher such as Seth Lugo may be especially valuable at this trade deadline.
