The Kansas City Royals earned a 16-12 victory against the New York Mets on Tuesday night. The Royals' offense has endured its share of ups and downs throughout the season, but the lineup had no trouble against the Mets' pitching in this contest. They displayed their potential in this game to say the least.
So, how did the Royals explode for so many runs?
The Royals finished the game with 16 runs on 19 hits. Tyler Tolbert led the way with a five-hit performance. Tolbert went 5-6 to go along with one home run, four runs scored and two RBI.
Surprisingly, the Royals only had two home runs despite the 16-run explosion. Nick Loftin hit the other long ball in the contest. Loftin and Lane Thomas had three hits as well. Thomas led the way from an RBI standpoint, as he recorded four in the game.
Tolbert was the story of the game with his five hits. He is now hitting .396/.434/.542 to go along with two home runs across 30 total games played this season. He's only recorded 48 at-bats, but Tolbert has impressed while on the field this year without question.
Tolbert has only played in a total of 94 total games in his big league career. He has played well overall when given an opportunity, as he holds a career .337 batting average and an .835 OPS.
Tolbert and the Royals will look to bring the momentum into their next game against the Mets on Wednesday. Of course, the team will need to pitch better overall moving forward.
The game on Tuesday represented the first contest of a three-game series for Kansas City on the road in New York. At 38-54, it has been a difficult season for the ball club, but Tuesday night's performance was a step in the right direction.
Kansas City will play the Mets once again on Wednesday and Thursday before traveling to Baltimore for another three-game series over the weekend. That will be the team's final series before the All-Star break.
The Royals have struggled overall, but they would obviously love to enter the All-Star break on a high note. For now, they will focus on their current series against the Mets in New York.
The Royals can clinch a series victory on Wednesday night at 7:10 PM EST.
