Earlier this week, New York Giants star nose tackle Dexter Lawrence formally requested a trade amid an extended dispute over a new contract with the team.

Despite a new regime led by Super Bowl-winning head coach John Harbaugh, Lawrence is clearly unhappy with the way things currently stand between him and the franchise.

Former two-time Super Bowl champion Justin Tuck, who was promoting the release of The Beast by Dane Brugler, spoke with Giants Wire and shared his thoughts on the situation between Lawrence and the team that drafted him back in 2019.

"I can only talk about what I know. There's a lot of speculation and a lot of things in which we don't have information on, regardless of how that negotiation has gone. Is it the agent, is it Dexter, is it the Giants? I don't know," Tuck said. "From what I can tell you, he's one of the most dominant players to ever put on that uniform. I'm glad to hear Coach Harbaugh say he is a cornerstone of the franchise, because he is—when healthy. I think he's in line with your defensive MVP candidate every year when healthy.

"I like him, personally. I like his demeanor. I like his presence in the locker room. My hope is that we can come to some sense of a deal. I obviously get both sides of this thing, but you don't make a living in this league letting guys like Dexter Lawrence leave your franchise, regardless of what you get back for him. Obviously, I know that everyone loves draft picks, but you've got a solid guy—more than a solid guy. You have a potential franchise-changing type of talent on your defense. You don’t let those guys walk out the door.

"So hopefully they can get something done there, but again, I understand both sides of it, and it has to make sense on both sides. I'm obviously rooting for him and our G-men keeping him in a blue uniform—our blue uniform."

Like Lawrence, Tuck played on a number of defensive lines with a ton of talent surrounding him and knows all too well how important it is for the defensive line to be successful in order to help the team.

Lawrence, who was selected with a pick acquired in the Odell Beckham Jr. trade, was rewarded with a lucrative deal back in 2023 following his breakout season. However, the defensive tackle market has gone up since he signed that contract, and he is now on a very team-friendly deal.

When healthy, Lawrence is one of the best interior defensive linemen in the league and deserves to be paid like one.

Head coach John Harbaugh believes that Lawrence wants to stay with the Giants while acknowledging there is a business side as well.

Lawrence will command a hefty price for any team trying to trade for him. However, it is unlikely that any pick compensation will have the impact that Lawrence has on a down-to-down basis.

Like Tuck, many feel that it is in the Giants' best interest to get something done to keep Lawrence in a Giants uniform.
