Justin Gaethje pounded his way to a victory over Ilia Topuria by TKO Sunday, June 14. He kept delivering after the fight.

Not with his fists, but with his mouth.

After winning the lightweight title in the main event at UFC Freedom 250, Gaethje was asked how it felt to win considering he was a 6-to-1 underdog at times during the fight.

“Hey, I’m American,” Gaethje replied. “Two hundred and fifth years ago we were a lot bigger than 6-to-1 dogs. And look at us thriving now.’’

At 37, Gaethje is thriving like never before. He finally won his first undisputed title.

Though Gaethje declines to discuss his fighting future at length, Topuria may have been his last victim.

“When they look back, I think my career is going to age like fine wine,’’ Gaethje said at the post-event press conference.

When they look here, here's what they'll see (as cited by Gaethje): Installed as the underdog in 12 of his 16 UFC fights. Ranked in the Top 5 of the lightweight division since 2017. Collected 17 bonuses in 16 fights.

“These are the things I'm most proud of,’’ he said.

On Monday, a post on Topuria's Instagram made it clear Topuria wants a rematch.

During an appearance on Paramount+ livestream after his fight, Gaethje said, "I am such a huge fan of this kid but where do you go from here? It’s going to be very tough, a tough climb back for him. …I’ve never had the mindset he’s had. I never thought myself unbeatable or infallible. I knew, I said it from Day 1 I’m going to get knocked out, with how I fight, with how crazy this sport is.

“Again, I don’t want to say anything bad about this guy. He was a world champion.

“But he is in the hospital. And I’m not.’’
