The Detroit Red Wings addressed their biggest need at the trade deadline when they acquired defenseman Justin Faulk from the St. Louis Blues.
It cost a first-round pick, among other assets, but the Wings' competitiveness has put high picks back in play after years of being off-limits. It was a move that had to be made, and Faulk is an attractive addition.
The 33-year-old has played more than 1,000 NHL games. The right-shot defender will slide into the second pairing spot opposite Ben Chiarot, enabling the Wings to move rookie Axel Sandin-Pellikka to the third pairing, where he won't see such tough matchups. Sandin-Pellikka's propensity for high-risk plays made him a liability to have on the ice late in close games, putting more pressure on the top pairing of Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson.

The 6-foot, 208-pound Faulk has spent the past seven seasons with the St. Louis Blues. Before that, he was with the Carolina Hurricanes for eight seasons. He has 490 points in 1,041 games.
It was the third move made before the trade deadline on Friday, March 6. The night before, the Wings brought back David Perron, sending a conditional fourth-round pick to the Ottawa Senators. Also on Friday, they sent little-used forward Elmer Söderblom to the Penguins for a third-round pick (which belonged to the San Jose Sharks).
The Blues also received a third-round pick and defenseman Justin Holl, who had been playing in the Wings' farm system in the third season of a three-year deal signed in 2023.
Faulk also brings playoff experience to the Wings' lineup, having appeared in 45 games, 15 of them with the Hurricanes in 2019. He joined the Blues the season after they won the Cup in 2019.
This shores up the Wings' defense at least through next season.
