One of Southwest Florida's own is headed to Omaha.
JT Huether, a freshman right-hander at West Virginia, will join the Mountaineers in the College World Series. West Virginia opens against Troy at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 12.
Here's what to know about Huether.
As a senior, Huether was solid on the mound for the Cougars, serving as a big part in Canterbury's title run. He went 5-4 with a 2.08 ERA, striking out 70. He had 12 strikeouts in the last start of his high school career, which came against Orangewood Christian in the Class 1A state semifinal. The Cougars won that game in extra innings, 3-2.
At the plate, Huether hit .319 with eight doubles, a triple, and a pair of home runs with 20 RBI, helping the program capture its fourth state title in a 6-2 win over St. Johns Country Day.
Despite being a freshman, Huether has found time on the mound with the Mountaineers. He's appeared in eight games, pitching 4 2/3 innings, allowing a hit, four runs, and eight walks with eight strikeouts. He has a 7.71 ERA this year and has not pitched since May 23 against Kansas.
One of the oldest programs in the Country, this is West Virginia's first-ever trip to Omaha. After a pair of regional titles in 2024 and 2025, the Mountaineers finally got over the hump, securing a Super Regional title after beating Cal Poly, which beat Virginia Tech and Saint Mary's to advance to the supers. In their 17th NCAA Tournament appearance, they'll aim to capture their first College World Series championship.
