One of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL is available as a free agent.
The New England Patriots released Joshua Dobbs on Monday, who has handled multiple starting stints for teams in relief over the years. He will undoubtedly land another backup job elsewhere.
The big question is where he might land next. Who needs a quarterback of Dobbs' caliber to back up their starter?
Let's run through some possible landing spots for Dobbs, who could reasonably see NFL action this season if something happens to his new team's starter... or could honestly start in the right scenario.
Dobbs played for Cleveland in 2022, but he could return and quite honestly push for the starting job with the lackluster shape of the team's quarterback room. Dobbs could be a solid fit for Todd Monken's offense.
The Falcons signed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to push Michael Penix Jr. If Penix isn't healthy to start the season, Atlanta could bring in the Alpharetta, Georgia, native to back up Tagovailoa until Penix is healthy. He has a connection to Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski from their season together in Cleveland.
If Los Angeles isn't comfortable with Stetson Bennett as Matthew Stafford's main backup, Dobbs could slot in behind Stafford for a year and give Sean McVay and company a little breathing room at quarterback.
If the Saints trade Spencer Rattler at any point this offseason, Dobbs could automatically fill in as Tyler Shough's primary backup. Dobbs would give New Orleans the runway to trade Rattler to a QB-needy team.
If the Packers don't trade for Anthony Richardson to replace Malik Willis as Jordan Love's primary backup, Dobbs would make a lot of sense. His starting experience could intrigue Green Bay.
