The Indiana Hoosiers shocked the college football world a season ago. The Hoosiers won their first-ever national title, completing a 16-0 season with former James Madison head coach Curt Cignetti at the helm.

UCLA football answered by bringing in former James Madison head coach Bob Chesney to lead the rebuild of the program. It’s easy to excited about the job Chesney has done over the offseason, bringing in talented coordinators and over three dozen transfers.

The excitement isn’t just in Westwood either, college football commentator Josh Pate is all aboard the UCLA hype train as well. On Josh Pate’s College Football Show, Pate detailed the comparison between Chesney and Cignetti.

“I’m big on UCLA this year and beyond,” Pate said. “I’m big on UCLA’s potential this year and I’m absolutely big on their potential as a program as long as Bob Chesney is there. They just brought in the No. 11 portal class. They got 42 new guys there.”

Pate also identified quarterback Nico Iamaleava as one of the biggest individual winners for lucking into Chesney as a head coach.

“It’s the biggest blessing that Nico Iamaleava could have never even known to pray for,” Pate said. “Leaving Knoxville, he had no clue what he was walking into and he never could have known this was going to be the situation he was in two years later.”

After how dominant Indiana was in 2025, it’s hard to label unproven teams as the “next Indiana” but Pate views UCLA as a potential team that’s following the same recipe.

“In this post-Curt Cignetti Indiana world that we live in. Now I’m not going to be the dude that constantly tries to find the next Indiana,” Pate said. “But what I’m also not going to be, is shocked if someone starts to look similar to the way they have in Indiana because they’ve got similar ingredients. In this case, the guy came from the same school.”
