Tennessee football coach Josh Heupel isn't allowed to talk publicly about recruits until they sign, but that didn't stop Ron Slay from asking about the Vols' most high-profile target.

The Vols are a finalist for five-star running back David Gabriel Georges, who is announcing his commitment on July 22. Tennessee has been in a recruiting battle with Ohio State for months, one that has generated a seemingly endless flow of discussion. Slay, the former All-American Vols basketball player, found a creative way to slip Gabriel Georges into an interview with Heupel on Nashville's WGFX on July 20 at SEC media days.

"Best back that you've seen in high school," asked Slay. "Jamal Lewis or DGG?"

Heupel, clearly caught off guard, laughed. "What are you talking about, man?"

Heupel answered that Lewis was "the best back" before finishing with: "I can't even answer that question."

While Heupel has to remain coy when it comes to Gabriel Georges — at least for now — the five-star's commitment has been one of the most awaited of any player in the class of 2027. His three finalists are Tennessee, Ohio State and Ole Miss, although most see it as a two-team race between the Vols and Buckeyes.

The top prospect from Tennessee, Gabriel Georges plays for Baylor School in Chattanooga. As a junior last season, he rushed for 1,749 yards with 27 touchdowns. He is ranked by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 10 player in his class and No. 2 running back, reportedly fielding NIL offers in the millions.

Gabriel Georges has a long way to go to be in the same tier as Lewis, the former Tennessee star who rushed for over 10,000 yards in the NFL. But with his recruitment in its final stages, the questions as to where he'll go will only ramp up — even if Heupel can't answer them yet.
