Josh Elander made his head coaching debut with Tennessee baseball on Friday.

No. 15 Tennessee (1-0) opened its 2026 season with a, 10-0, win against Nicholls at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The series opener ended after eight innings due to a run-rule decision.

Elander discussed Tennessee's opening day win after the game.

“At the third base box, I spent a lot of time over there, over the years, so that's kind of my comfort zone,” Elander said. “I just thought the vibes in the dugout were great from our players and coaches, and just the way we were communicating, really no tension or anything in there, and just kind of talking through some different scenarios.

“You always have kind of plan A, and we had to adjust a little bit tonight in a good way, but yeah, it was a good day."

Elander was promoted to head coach after serving as Tennessee's associate head coach and recruiting coordinator from 2022-25. He was also the Vols' assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2018-22.

The Vols and Colonels will play a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch for Game 2 is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST and a series finale will take place approximately 45 minutes after.
