MINNEAPOLIS — A second round of imaging revealed the worst-case scenario for the Mets' Jose Siri.

Despite initial X-rays on Siri's left leg coming back negative, the Mets center fielder was still sore and in pain after fouling a pitch off above his shin guard during the Mets' 3-1 loss to the Athletics on Saturday.

Siri underwent another MRI and CT scan on Monday which revealed a fractured tibia. While there is no initial timeline for Siri's recovery, he is expected to be out for an extended period.

"It's obviously disappointing whenever something like that happens, but at the same time, we're not going too ahead of ourselves. We're probably going reevaluate probably within the next week to see how it is. Every body's different. I'm a quick healer, so hopefully something good can come out of it."

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that he will have to get with president of baseball operations David Stearns to discuss the team's center field position. Siri was already in a platoon situation with Tyrone Taylor, who has played the last three games since the injury.

The outfield position was one of the team's deepest heading into the 2025 season, with Jesse Winker and Starling Marte being featured at designated hitter despite each playing the outfield.

Brandon Nimmo served as the Mets' primary center fielder through the 2023 season before the arrival of Taylor and Harrison Bader last season. He made 28 appearances at the position last season.

"I've gotta talk to David to see what's the decision, who's the one coming up," Mendoza said. "I feel good with what we have here. Tyrone Taylor will continue to get a lot of opportunities. We'll prepare Winker to get more and obviously Marte. We feel good with our outfield depth. It's unfortunate for Siri."

Another position for Luisangel Acuña?

Before Monday's game and the news of Siri's injury, Mendoza said that Luisangel Acuña could be another option to play in the middle of the outfield. The Mets manager wanted the 23-year-old to spend time at the position during batting practice on Monday. Acuña played 31 games in center field at Triple-A Syracuse last season.

"The good things is he had experience there," Mendoza said. "Last year he played there in Triple-A, so we want to start that process here now."

Siri was off to a slow start offensively in his first season with the Mets after being acquired in a trade with the Rays last Novemeber.

In his first 10 games with the Mets, he was 1-for-20 with a double and four walks, and he wreaked havoc when he reached base, stealing two bases and scoring five runs.
