China’s Ning Zhongyan won the men’s 1,500 meters at the Winter Olympics on Thursday, securing his nation’s first speed skating medal of these Games and claiming the first Olympic gold of his career.

American Jordan Stolz took silver after winning two gold medals earlier in the Games and Dutchman Kjeld Nuis earned bronze to complete the podium.

Stolz was attempting to become the only male speedskater to win exactly 4 gold medals one Olympics but will fall short. Eric Heiden won 5 in 1980.

Stolz has one event remaining.
