ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- You can ask redshirt sophomore running back Jordan Marshall about how excited he is to come back for another year as the likely starter, and how much he's going to run the ball in Jason Beck's offense, but much of his excitement appears to center around another position on offense.

Marshall is well aware that he's now playing under an offensive coordinator in Beck who has had the No. 2 rushing attack two years running. But for him, the exciting thing is that the receivers are so much better, and that should provide more options for him and his room.

"We ran the ball a lot last year," Marshall said, "but the fact that we can be 50-50 and that we have receivers that can go get the ball, we have receivers that can make plays and make people miss, that's exciting because we were running into eight, nine people boxes last year, and that can be challenging and hard on your body over time. So to have that 50-50 split, or we might pass more in one game. I might not touch the ball; it doesn't matter."

In his estimation, the pass catchers aren't just better, the room is fully revamped. Andrew Marsh returns for his sophomore campaign. The Wolverines brought in JJ Buchanan and Jaime Ffrench via the transfer portal. Other players are stepping up.

Through a week and a half of spring ball, Marshall is seeing a big difference in how the group is coming along.

"We have so many explosive players all over the board, not only running back, but that receiver room is, I think, going to be one of the best," Marshall said. "It's a young room, but they're explosive. They all want to go make plays. They all can make plays. And it's exciting to see where that room's at. Micah has done a great job, like truly love him, coaches those guys hard, and we needed that. We needed that room to be really, really good. We need it so we can help in the run game, so Bryce plays better, and again, it's really exciting to see how that room has already taken off, and we're only a week and a half into spring ball."

Marshall detailed a little more of who's stepped up, and to no one's surprise, Marsh is among them. But he's also enthusiastic about Kendrick Bell's resurgence (Bell got his first career touchdown in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl), and overall, it just seems as if the group is playing much faster.

"I'm going to say it again, the receiving room is revamped. It's amazing," Marshall said. "Andrew Marsh has taken great leadership. (Kendrick Bell's) taken great leadership in that room, and it's going to be exciting. I'm excited to see the spring game, just to see these guys go play, and play fast, and have fun.

"This is what spring ball is about: getting better as a team, and then once that game comes, everybody gets to go see how explosive and what this offense is really going to be about."

The spring game will take place on April 18 at The Big House.
