Jordan Henderson suffered a ‘freak’ injury while celebrating England’s epic win over Mexico

Jordan Henderson made history by becoming the first English player to appear in four World Cups when he subbed in against Panama a few weeks ago and is a veteran leader for a team intent on finally bringing it home. Though the midfielder did not step between the lines during his team’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico on hostile soil, he found a way to get involved. Henderson was assessed a yellow card for berating officials late in the match. He was also right in the middle of the Three Lions’ celebration, which proved to be a very dangerous place to be.

After belting out a joyous rendition of Oasis’ “Wonderwall” with English fans brave enough to file into Azteca Stadium, Henderson tried to jump over some advertising boarding, resulting in what is being called a “freak” injury to his wrist.

Several of Henderson’s teammates confirmed the injury, with Thomas Tuchel stating that Henderson required hospitalization. It’s believed he’ll stay in Mexico as the rest of the England team travels to back it its training base in Kansas City.

Obviously, this is a sour note for the night to end on. But goodness, what a match. This World Cup has been bursting at the seams with drama. It feels as though every day there’s another contender for a match so good that it will never be forgotten. Then it’s slightly forgotten as a new contender enters the fray.

England-Mexico, though, might be impossible to beat. When people say “absolute scenes” these are the scenes they’re describing. It sounds like Henderson may not be available for the rest of his country’s remarkable run. Yet that’s about the only fly in the ointment for a side that pulled off the near impossible to reach the quarterfinals.
