Jon Rahm was tied for fifth after 18 holes at the U.S. Open, but instead of contending for his third major title, he'll be watching the weekend action at Shinnecock Hills from his couch.
After posting a 2-under 68 in the first round, the Spanish superstar shot 78 in the second round, plummeting nearly 100 spots down the leaderboard and falling well below the cut line, which is projected to end up at 3 or 4 over.
Rahm had to complete his first round Friday morning after play was suspended due to darkness, thanks to a two-hour fog delay early Thursday. He capped off an impressive bogey-free outing with a birdie at the 17th.
Rahm started his second round with three straight pars before making bogey at No. 4. He rebounded with birdie at the fifth, but then carded back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 6 and 7. He had a good look at birdie on the ninth, but his putt didn't break how he expected and skirted the right side of the cup, which prompted the 31-year-old Spaniard to unleash a loud obscenity that was picked up by the TV microphone.
Still, he made the turn in 2-over 37 and was sitting comfortably inside the cutline at even par for the tournament. But the wheels fell off on the back nine.
He made four consecutive bogeys on Nos. 12-15, hitting just one green in regulation in that stretch at par-4 13th, where he three-putted. It was nothing short of disaster for the 2021 U.S. Open champion, and it only got worse. His drive on the par-5 16th found a fairway bunker, his second shot found another fairway bunker and his third shot ended up in a greenside bunker. His fourth shot? Well, it failed to leave the bunker. Rahm finally got his ball onto the putting surface with his fifth shot and two-putted for a double-bogey seven.
It's a surprising and discouraging result for Rahm, who tied for second at the PGA Championship last month and entered this week with the third-shortest odds to win the U.S. Open, behind only Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. Rahm, ranked No. 8 in the world, has also been dynamite on LIV Golf this season, with two wins and three runner-up finishes.
But he won't have a tee time this weekend at Shinnecock and he'll have to wait until mid-July for another crack at his third major title when he competes in the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. LIV does not have any events scheduled between now and then, but Rahm could always tee it up at a DP World Tour event if he chooses.
It was a lackluster showing from LIV Golf's two biggest stars at the U.S. Open, as Bryson DeChambeau also struggled Friday, shooting 5-over 75 to also fall outside the cutline.
