Joe Joyce has come under intense criticism and calls for retirement following a loss to Filip Hrgovic at Manchester's Co-op Live Arena.
Joyce (16-4, 15 KOs) is currently in danger of slipping out of space on the heavyweight scope as his boxing career continued to unravel after Hrgovic (18-1, 14 KOs) defeated him.
“I saw a video that was on social media. I think it lasted for about four to five minutes. Joe was speaking on camera and not making any sense at all. It was heartbreaking to watch. He's taken unnecessary punishments now. I called for this after the Derek Chisora fight. And I just hope good people are around to say Joe, enough's enough. You know, I'd like to believe he's earned a few quid and he's done. Let me tell you, he's earned every single penny of it. Just walk away into the sunset and enjoy what you've done,” said ex-world champion Tony Bellew in an exclusive interview with CardPlayer.
Joyce, who is a silver medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, obtained his first 15 professional matches, but was stopped twice by Zhilei Zhang in 2023 before being outclassed by Derek Chisora last July.
Queried if he was considering hanging his gloves after what is now four losses in his last five bouts, Joyce noted: "Are you not entertained? It was a good fight, and it was tough.
"He's a great fighter, he's been doing it a long time. We can do it again," he said in a post-fight interview.
Nonetheless, his promoter Frank Warren noted Joyce needs to have a "real serious think about the future".
"We'll all have a chat and see where we go from there," added Warren.
"It was a very close fight. Joe has been a great servant for British boxing, and he's never in a boring fight," he said in a presser after Joyce’s fight with Hrgovic.
Elsewhere, Jonny Fisher has urged Joyce to stay put.
“I saw some improvement from Joe Joyce from his performance against Chisora, too. He looked a bit fresher, a bit fitter, and I believe there's life in him yet. Look at Derek Chisora. If they've been cleared to fight and they can earn their money, no one, especially people who don't box, is in a position to tell them to stop. When the medical professionals tell you to stop, that's when you should stop. But if they want to continue, nobody has earned the right to tell them not to,” said Fisherin an exclusive interview with Crowns Gym.
