This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with retired Major League Baseball All-Star and FOX Sports analyst John Smoltz.

In his interview with Easton Jr., Smoltz discusses his participation in this year's American Century Championship, which will take place July 10-12 at Edgewood Tahoe and air on NBC and Peacock. He reflected on the influence of sports over the years, comparing the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Braves.

"Baseball has the best golfers, we think, but when it comes down to it, it's every man for themselves trying to find a way to get to that winner's circle," said Smoltz, "There is something special about competition and playing golf when there's a leaderboard, and there's a purse and all the things that come along with it."

Smoltz played for the Braves for 20 seasons, contributing to a World Series title, while also experiencing disappointment with the Falcons' Super Bowl appearances.

"I went to both Super Bowls that the Falcons played in. Unfortunately, we already know what happened; it was the most epic, one of the most disappointing (moments) in Houston against the New England Patriots (Super Bowl LI)," said Smoltz. "This city had been starving for a championship for so long. It's a football city for the most part. We turned it kind of into a baseball town starting in '91, but I think there was this pride, like anything else, when you're, when you haven't had a championship, you're rooting for that team."

The Kansas City Chiefs will visit Mercedes-Benz Stadium during Week 10 of the 2026 season to battle Atlanta on November 15. The Falcons, led by Bijan Robinson and Drake London, barely missed the postseason in 2025.

"No matter where you're from, if you play in that city, you're rooting for that city and that team to get its championship. I went to both: one in Miami (Super Bowl XXXIII) and one in Houston (Super Bowl LI). I've been here 39 years," said Smoltz," My adopted city is now Atlanta, and I root for teams that, unless they're playing the Detroit Lions, those were big moments. Fortunately, we got one in '95 (1995 World Series) and then, of course, just recently another Braves championship, but I think this place would love to see more championships, that's for sure."

The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, over $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC/Peacock and a first-place prize of $150,000 make the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in golf.
