Jun. 4—ST. MICHAEL — De'Marreus Wells broke a 46-year-old John Marshall triple jump record on Thursday, the first day of the two-day Class 3A track and field state meet at St. Michael/Albertville.
Wells, who would have competed at state a year ago had it not been for an injury, made up for that miss with a spectacular showing Thursday.
His best distance coming into the day had been 44-2 1/2.
"This is awesome," JM jumps coach Kyle Riggott said. "I am fired up. This is what you have with a kid peaking at just the right time. He is gaining a lot of speed and we figured out that he needed a longer runway."
Wells had been dealing with a slight ankle injury going into the meet. But when he woke Thursday morning, he felt primed.
"I felt super good when I got up here," Wells said. "I thought today would be the day that I got a PR (personal record)."
There was also the inspiration that Wells gleaned from the rest of the triple jump field.
He'd never been around so many jumpers who were competing at that high of a level.
"It was a really competitive meet; one of the craziest meets I've ever seen," Wells said. "I just wanted to (duplicate) what everyone else was doing. It was super fun competing."
The winning distance went to Jamal Wamah of Roseville Area. He cleared 47-10. Wells' jump was good for fifth place. JM's Kuria Mbuthia also received a medal in the event, going 44-1 1/2 for eighth place overall.
—JM's Norah Miller had a tough day. She no-heighted in the high jump and got off just one legal jump in the long jump, going 16 feet. That was well below her 19-2 1/2 jump that she managed in last week's section meet. Miller will compete in the triple jump on Saturday, likely her best event.
—JM distance runner Abi Tri finished 11th overall in the 3,200. She was clocked in 11:08.16, which was nine seconds faster than her section time.
—In a preliminary event, the Mayo 4x100 relay team of Lyric Urban, Taylor Kurtz, Emma Clarey and Josie Van Brunt set a meet record, finishing first in 47.17.
It was the fifth time this season that that foursome had broken their own school record.
"I couldn't be prouder of them," Mayo coach Jered Smiley said. "You could see from the get go, from when Lyric started the race, that all four of those girls were determined to make that the best they'd ever done it."
They will now be the favorites to win the race in Saturday's finals. They are also planning to run it at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor meet in Philadelphia on June 18-21.
