It sure seems like John Harbaugh is the right coach for the ascending New York Giants. He's now handled two tricky situations — the Abdul Carter-Jaxson Dart controversy over Donald Trump, and Cam Skattebo's public recklessness with his own health — with aplomb. By that I mean he's trusted his players to be adults and handle these sorts of issues internally, as teammates.
These Giants don't need a babysitter. They need a guy with experience who knows when to step in and get guys to listen to him and when he should let things play out. A coach of Harbaugh's experience over nearly two decades of success with the Baltimore Ravens certainly understands that distinction, which is important.
But a new viral video from the Giants' media team suggests Big Blue's players are not, in fact, hanging on Harbaugh's every word. It features the first-year Giants coach trying to fire his guys up in what seems like a pre-practice speech while repeating the team's name over and over, as if anyone present somehow forgot which organization they're a part of. (Narrator: They did not forget.)
Uh, I could be reading too much into things, but none of Harbaugh's diatribe seems to resonate with anyone else sitting in the room.
Oh, goodness, is that a stretchhhhh of an acronym on the wall in the background, too?
W. I. N., a.k.a, "What's Important Now." Hey, I'll admit I don't know young football players as well as I could. But I do know that, with some young men who happen to be professional football players, motivational acronyms aren't a viable strategy. These guys are talented professionals. Treat them as such. I don't know how much Harbaugh is emphasizing that acronym teaching, to be sure, but I do know he shouldn't overindex on it, at the very least.
It's the offseason, though, dearest readers, so (probably) overanalyzing clips from social media is the name of the game. But even if that's the case here: Why did the Giants' social team think this, of all things, was a good clip to share with the masses? I'm definitely not the only one who thought Harbaugh's short lecture fell a little flat upon watching it.
I am not at all fired up about it, which tells me that some Giants players in the video aren't fired up, either.
