John Harbaugh used the Abdul Carter and Jaxson Dart controversy over Donald Trump as a teaching moment for the New York Giants locker room.
The issue had moved beyond a simple disagreement between teammates. Dart’s appearance at a Trump rally, and Carter’s public reaction to it, forced the Giants to deal with politics, representation and team unity at the same time.
Harbaugh’s response was not to bury the topic. He turned it into a conversation the whole team had to work through together.

John Harbaugh turns Abdul Carter and Jaxson Dart tension into New York Giants lesson
Speaking in an SNY Giants clip, Harbaugh explained why the controversy gave New York a real chance to discuss something bigger than football.
“It was good opportunity for us as a football team to have these kind of conversations around real, a real life incident,” Harbaugh said.
He added, “It’s one thing to talk about it in theory, … but when you have something that happens that’s, like, real, … you get a chance to talk about them practically.”
That is the part Harbaugh leaned into. The Giants could have treated the Dart-Carter situation as unwanted noise, but the head coach saw value in making players talk through the impact of a real public disagreement.
Dart had introduced Trump at a New York rally, while Carter made clear he disagreed with that choice. The difficult part for the Giants was making sure that difference did not turn into a locker-room split.
John Harbaugh says New York Giants are moving forward after Donald Trump fallout
Harbaugh also explained that the Giants did not leave the issue to social media narratives or outside reaction.
“We had a chance to talk to the guys a little bit through the weekend. … The veterans came in, we had a really good conversations with those guys,” Harbaugh continued.
“We had a team meeting. … We need to understand, really, how we approach these things going forward. … We’re in a good place now, we’re moving forward,” he concluded.
That team meeting mattered because both players are important to the Giants’ future. Dart is the young quarterback expected to lead the offense, while Carter is one of the defensive faces of the franchise.
Harbaugh’s job was to protect the team without pretending the disagreement did not exist. He needed players to understand that public choices can affect teammates, especially when politics enters the locker room conversation.
The message now is clear. Carter and Dart may see the Trump issue differently, but the Giants want the fallout handled through communication, not division.
