In what was, by itself, a surprising season from man 1 to 15 for the Boston Celtics, reserve guard Baylor Scheierman has been something of an enigma himself, rising from a wing on the edge of Boston's rotation to a key part of it by the last few months of the campaign.

This leap forward was not lost on Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla after Scheierman helped power the Celtics to a 113-108 win over the Orlando Magic despite sitting eight of their best players. "I think you have to establish a new identity, said Mazzulla of Scheierman's season.

"His patience, I think, his defense, and his ability to read the game, you take a perfect example (from them)," said the Celtics coach.

"I think in the middle of the third quarter, around a little bit of a run, he took a tough shot, a couple of steps over half court, and you want him to have that confidence, but he knew right away, like, 'Okay, I've got to read the game now, we're in a different position'."

"And then he just learns defense situational basketball, but at the end of the day, he’s a huge competitor – and you saw that tonight."
