Former super featherweight champion Joe Cordina recently found himself forced out of a title bid against Abdullah Mason due to visa issues, opening the door for Albert Bell to take his place a week from Saturday. We now know the source of those issues, as Wales Online and the BBC report that Cordina is facing charges of “assault and threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public place,” with a court appearance scheduled just three days after the Mason fight would have taken place.

Per Wales Online, the incident occurred outside a petrol station in Cardiff this past February. There is alleged video circulating online.

Cordina (19-1, 9 KO), a former Olympian, blew away Kenichi Ogawa for the IBF belt in 2022 and made two successful defenses before losing it to Anthony Cacace in Riyadh. This was to be his first fight of 2026 after defeating Gabe Flores Jr this past December.

I suppose it’s nice to get a concrete reason for once as opposed to just gesturing vaguely at the byzantine U.S. immigration system whenever this sort of issue crops up.
