Joao Fonseca sent a message to Carlos Alcaraz following his Miami Open exit​

Joao Fonseca’s time at the Miami Open finished in the second round after falling to Carlos Alcaraz.

It was their first-ever meeting, and Alcaraz won 6-4, 6-4. He moves on to face Sebastian Korda in the third round.

Fonseca has now played both Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in back-to-back tournaments. The Brazilian lost to Sinner at Indian Wells before this latest defeat.

The 19-year-old had a message for his opponent after their match, posting on social media. The event also marked Joao Fonseca’s debut appearance at an ATP Masters 1000 event.

Taking to Instagram, Fonseca shared: “It was an honour to share the court with you @carlitosalcarazz. I leave the US swing more confident in myself, happy and with my head held high.

“These matches motivate me to keep working. Thank you all for the constant support.”

The Brazilian picked up four wins across the Sunshine Double, three of which were captured at Indian Wells.

Fonseca beat Raphael Collignon, Karen Khachanov and Tommy Paul in California before bowing out to Sinner in round four.

In Miami, he got past Fabian Marozsan in the first round before falling short against Alcaraz.

Joao Fonseca’s Updated Ranking Following Miami Open Exit​

Fonseca, who was making just his second appearance at the Miami Open, didn’t match his previous run from 2025.

Last year, he made it to the third round, defeating Learner Tien and Ugo Humbert before losing to Alex de Minaur.

This time around, an early exit in the second round means Fonseca will drop 20 ranking points when the tournament wraps up.

Even with that slight dip, it doesn’t change his current position in the live rankings. He’s still sitting at number 39 in the world.

If Fonseca wants to be seeded for Roland Garros in May, he’ll need to break into the top 32 before then.
