The assistant search for Texas Longhorns head coach Jim Schlossnagle is reportedly over with news breaking on Tuesday that Schlossnagle is replacing departed assistant Nolan Cain with two coaches with Jack Marder leaving the Oregon Ducks and Caleb Longley returning to Austin from the Cincinnati Reds organization.
Sources: @TexasBaseball is making two very strong hires and additions to its staff. The #Horns are hiring Oregon star assistant Jack Marder as the recruiting coordinator, while former Texas/Texas A&M assistant Caleb Longley will assist with hitters/recruiting. #Hookem

By himself, Marder is a direct replacement for Cain, who was known as an ace recruiter and a capable developer of catchers. Like Cain, Marder was the recruiting coordinator for the Ducks after playing catcher at Oregon. Like Cain, Marder is considered a future head coach selected as one of the “25 Assistants Most Ready To Be Head Coaches” by D1Baseball last October.
With experience as an infielder and outfielder in Eugene, Marder was a 16th round pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, spending four years in the Seattle Mariners organization before starting his coaching career at an NAIA school. Hired by Stanford in 2018, Marder spent two seasons in Palo Alto, helping to develop nine picks in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Mark Wasikowski brought Marder back to Eugene in 2020.
Over six seasons as an assistant with the Ducks, Marder helped Oregon make three Super Regional appearances, including a loss to Texas in the Austin Super Regional this year, and developing 12 players into MLB Draft picks as the Ducks set 19 new school records in eight major hitting categories, including notching the school’s best batting average in 2022 (.310) and setting the program’s home run record in 2024 (115).
And there’s a straight line between those record-setting teams and recruiting success after Marder helped Oregon sign Baseball America’s No. 5 recruiting class in 2022.
Longley will further bolster the recruiting efforts for the Longhorns in addition to working with the hitters. A power hitter at East Tennessee State, Longley got into coaching as the director of hitting development and analytics at Arizona State in 2020.
After the 2021 season, former Texas head coach David Pierce hired Longley as an assistant. Longley’s addition paid off quickly as the Horns produced the three highest home runs total in school history over his three seasons on the Forty Acres with the development of Ivan Melendez and Max Belyeu highlighting Longley’s resume in Austin. Longley also helped Texas sign back-t0-back top-three recruiting classes. Perhaps more impressive was Longley’s work with Murphy Stehly, who hit one homer over his first two seasons at Texas before launching 19 home runs as a redshirt senior in 2022.
When Schlossnagle took over for Pierce after the 2024 season, Michael Earley hired Longley to his staff in College Station, where his ability to produce effective power once again stood out. In January, Longley joined the Reds as a minor league hitting coach.
Longley also has a background in high-performance coaching, including training multiple quarterbacks for the NFL Draft.
So Schlossnagle managed to replace one of the top assistants in the country with another standout assistant with a similar skill set and an up-and-coming assistant with a proven track record at Texas.
