Jim Kelly built a Hall of Fame career inside the Buffalo Bills’ old stadium.

Now, after another health scare, the legendary quarterback is looking forward to making new memories in the team’s new home.

Kelly revealed Tuesday during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Highmark Stadium on Tuesday that he suffered a stroke this spring and spent several days in the hospital.

“I had a little setback about a month and a half ago,” Kelly told reporters. “But right now, I feel good. Eyesight’s not great. My hearing still sucks, but that’s part of life.”

Kelly, 66, said his latest cancer scans have come back clean.

“Everything’s good,” Kelly said. “All good.”

It was the latest health challenge for a player who has become one of Buffalo’s most recognizable symbols of perseverance.

Kelly was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in his upper jaw in 2013 and underwent surgery. The cancer returned in 2014 and required chemotherapy and radiation. He underwent additional surgeries in 2018 after another cancer diagnosis, including a procedure to reconstruct his upper jaw.

The former Bills quarterback received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the 2018 ESPYS after his public battle with cancer.

“I’m very blessed,” Kelly said. “It’s been about a month and a half since my setback, but I feel pretty good. I feel good. I can’t wait for the first game.”

The milestone will be especially meaningful for Kelly.

The Bills’ new $2.2 billion stadium sits across Abbott Road from the building where Kelly became one of the greatest players in franchise history. He played for Buffalo from 1986 to 1996, leading the Bills to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances. His No. 12 jersey is retired by the team and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

Kelly said he has already toured the new stadium several times.

“It’s awesome,” Kelly said. “I’ve been in here three or four times now, and I’ve gotten to walk in the locker room, I’ve been in there and it’s amazing and I can’t wait for opening day.”

The Bills will play preseason games in the new stadium, but Kelly has his eyes on Buffalo’s regular-season home opener against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 17.
