The stakes were always high for Mark Scheifele and the Winnipeg Jets, with difficulties arising due to their deficit in the series, but things became increasingly difficult when news arose that Scheifele's father, Brad, passed away in the night prior to Game 6.

"Mark will be playing tonight. As he said, it would be the wishes of his dad, and he would want him to play… he’s with us, and Mark really wants to play for him tonight," said HC Scott Arniel in a press conference before the game.

The decision was a quick one for Scheifele, and his decision to play worked for the Jets. He scored the lone goal for the Jets, which at the time was the go-ahead goal. Unfortunately, the Jets were unable to hold on, losing Game 6 in overtime and ending their season.

Following the news, more than $30,000 has been raised through $55 donations for the True North Youth Foundation, a charity supported by Scheifele.

Each player on the Dallas Stars roster took extra time to talk to Scheifele in the handshake line following the game, paying their respects to one of the most respected players in the NHL. Tyler Seguin and Scheifele are notoriously known for attempting to be the last player off the ice after warmups, but last night, Seguin put up no fight, allowing Scheifele the honours.

Stars HC Pete DeBoer called Scheifele's performance courageous, "just courageous what he did tonight."

An emotional Arniel expressed just how proud he was of Scheifele. "I'm so proud of him. His dad would be so proud of him."

Mason Marchment, who lost his father during his NHL career, took extra time to talk with Scheifele and share some words he was told when he was dealing with his loss.

"I just wanted to give him some words that I got told when my dad passed that really helped me think a different way about it. To just kind of comfort him with what happened."

Empathy is funny. It sneaks up on you, then quickly consumes your mind, your body, your soul.

Countless players, coaches and members of the media have shared their feelings and condolences for Scheifele and his family, further proving that Scheifele is one of the most respected figures in the NHL.
