The Jets player was reportedly shot on Sunday, Nov. 16 in New York City. A spokesperson from the New York Police Department (NYPD) said authorities responded to a 911 call “of a male shot in front of 156 West 38th Street” at approximately 2:09 a.m. local time.

The spokesperson added that officers found a 29-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, and he was transported to the nearby Bellevue Hospital in “critical condition.”

On Nov. 17, ABC 7 NY and ABC News reported that the athlete was in stable condition despite the bullet becoming stuck in Boyd's right lung. He underwent several surgeries following the shooting, the outlets reported.

Boyd was with two of his teammates outside of Sei Less, an Asian fusion restaurant on West 38th Street. Authorities reportedly said a motive remains unclear, but they believe a suspect possibly tried to steal jewelry from the NFL player before the shooting, per ABC 7 NY.

The news station also shared surveillance footage of the shooting suspect, though an identity has not yet been made public.

Boyd has spoken with police since the incident, the outlet shared.

The Jets told PEOPLE they are "aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd" but the organization "will have no further comment at this time" in a statement following the shooting.
