OTA practices are designed to install, condition, and lay the groundwork for what the Baltimore Ravens hope will be a successful season. They also occasionally provide memorable sound bites.
That was certainly the case following another productive day of Ravens OTA work, where both Jesse Minter and Derrick Henry offered quotes worth discussing for very different reasons. Minter handled the more predictable topic. Henry, meanwhile, gave everyone something far less serious to enjoy.
Lamar Jackson’s absence from a Baltimore Ravens OTA session was always going to spark conversation. That’s what happens when one of the NFL’s biggest stars isn’t visible during offseason workouts, even voluntary ones. Speculation fills the void quickly, particularly when the absent player happens to be the face of a franchise with Super Bowl aspirations.
Jesse Minter, however, didn’t sound remotely concerned. Speaking with reporters, Baltimore’s first-year head coach offered a calm and fairly direct update on Jackson’s temporary absence.
That should end the discussion. Or at least, it should quiet the louder corners of it. Jackson missing a voluntary OTA session isn’t exactly breaking news. Veteran stars routinely manage this portion of the calendar differently, especially players with established resumes, proven leadership equity, and no questions surrounding their role within the organization.
Jackson checks every box. More importantly, Minter's wording matters. He didn't sound evasive. He didn't sound annoyed. He didn't sound like someone trying to smooth over a brewing issue. He sounded like a head coach who knows exactly where his quarterback stands, has communicated directly with him, and isn't losing sleep over a couple of missed spring practices.
Henry offered some insight into his early impressions of Minter, describing Baltimore's new head coach with one word Ravens fans will probably appreciate: "Hungry."
That's exactly the type of energy supporters want to hear about from a first-year coach stepping into a championship-level situation, but if we're being honest, Henry's best quote came later. He also provided some comic relief.
After briefly staying down following a collision during practice, some observers understandably wondered whether something was wrong. Henry quickly put those fears to rest classically.
He joked that he stayed down because “the ground felt like a bed” and the media looked “hot and bored,” so he figured he’d give them something to tweet.
Now that’s how you handle OTA drama. No real injury. No panic. Just Derrick Henry trolling the beat reporters. For a spring practice session that won't mean much once the season begins, Baltimore still managed to deliver exactly what fans love this time of year: reassurance, optimism, and at least one genuinely funny moment.

“Just banged knees. I was fine. I probably laid there too long,”
