The 2024 NFL Draft featured a highly unique, sentimental storyline for the San Francisco 49ers, showcasing a handful of prospects who happen to be the direct descendants of franchise royalty. While the front office ultimately secured wide receiver Terique Owens, the son of Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, to an offseason contract, another legacy pass-catcher seemed completely destined to eventually wear the red and gold.
Instead, Brenden Rice, the son of the consensus greatest wide receiver in football history, Jerry Rice, found himself drifting down the draft board.
Selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the seventh round, the younger Rice has spent the last two calendar years navigating a frantic NFL map. After the Green Bay Packers claimed him off the waiver wire back in May, Rice is officially occupying his fifth different NFL franchise before his third professional season even gets underway.
To put Rice’s nomadic professional arc into perspective, his on-field footprint remains incredibly minimal despite the high volume of travel. He has only logged snaps in three career games, all during his 2024 rookie campaign under Jim Harbaugh in Los Angeles, where he spent 10 snaps on special teams and three on offense without generating a single official target.

During his two-year collegiate stint at USC, Rice proved to be an elite, explosive threat down the seam for quarterback Caleb Williams. He racked up 1,402 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns on 84 receptions, proving he has the physical vertical speed to stretch intermediate coverage zones.
Given that heavy chemistry with Williams, it remains a genuine surprise that the Chicago Bears haven't extended a practice squad flyer to reunite the former Trojans weapons. If Green Bay opts to expose Rice to waivers at the roster cutdown deadline on August 30, Chicago would be a highly logical landing spot.
Ultimately, it still feels like a mathematical inevitability that Rice will wind up in Santa Clara at some point in his career.
While John Lynch's wide receiver room currently sits in an advantageous spot with the recent addition of veteran star Mike Evans and the draft selection of De’Zhaun Stribling, summer training camp routines are notorious for forcing unexpected attrition. If a sudden string of injuries or standard practice bumps thins out the bottom of the depth chart in August, the front office should not hesitate to bring another Rice into the facility.
Green Bay might hold his contract for the immediate future, but the 49ers' scouting department needs to keep a sharp eye on the waiver wire. The legacy demands it, and if given the proper structural runway, Brenden Rice could finally find his footing right where his father built an immortal legacy.
